A small hotel with people at its heart
At Hotel Arnkilhus, there aren’t that many of us - neither rooms nor people. And that is actually one of the things we love most about this place.
With just 12 rooms, we can run the hotel in the way we like best: personally, informally and with time for our guests. There is no large reception or a constant stream of different faces. Most days, you will meet Anne Mette, Yvonne or Linda - our small, permanent team who together keep life at Arnkilhus running smoothly.
Many of our guests return again and again. Some stay with us for work, while others come to Sønderborg for the hospital, a concert, a family celebration or simply a few days away from home. It means that we often recognise both faces and names - and we really like that.
An old town hotel given new life
Arnkilhus has been part of Arnkilgade for many years, but in 2024 a completely new chapter began.
The hotel was renovated from top to bottom, and in May 2025 we opened the doors to the new Hotel Arnkilhus. Since then, the hotel has grown to 12 individually decorated rooms - but our aim has remained the same: to preserve the feeling of a small and cosy place.
We have a soft spot for colours, wallpaper and quirky little details, and no two rooms are quite alike. For us, atmosphere matters more than everything being perfectly uniform.
The same goes for the rest of the hotel. We want our guests to feel at home - whether that means relaxing in one of our lounges, enjoying the terrace when the weather allows, or simply helping themselves to a cup of coffee and taking a quiet moment.
In 2026, Hotel Arnkilhus was selected for the MICHELIN Guide Hotel Selection - a recognition we are both proud of and delighted to receive for our little hotel.
Personal - without hovering
We like being around our guests, but we also know that good service doesn’t always mean more service.
Some guests enjoy a chat and would like recommendations for Sønderborg. Others prefer to come and go quietly and enjoy their stay on their own. There should be room for both.
For us, being personal is often about the little things. Remembering a returning guest. Helping when plans suddenly change. Noticing when someone needs a hand - or simply needs a good cup of coffee, a comfortable bed and some peace and quiet after a long day.
It is difficult to turn that into a formula. And perhaps that is exactly why we love running a small hotel.
Welcome
We hope, of course, that you find Arnkilhus cosy. That the bed is comfortable, the breakfast tastes good and that you find everything you need.
But when you leave again, what we hope most of all is that you felt genuinely welcome - and that you felt at home while you were here.
That is, quite simply, what we would like Hotel Arnkilhus to be known for.

Arnkilhus has a sister
The cosy town hotel and the cosy country hotel.
Arnkilhus is our small town hotel, close to the centre of Sønderborg, the waterfront and the city’s cultural life.
Als Kloster is the cosy country hotel, surrounded by fields and the peace and quiet of the countryside.
The two hotels are run by the same family and each has its own story, atmosphere and people looking after things day to day, but behind the scenes they are closely connected. We help each other across the two hotels, and at both places we care about all the little details that help make our guests’ stay a really good one.
